MEET OUR TEACHERS: BETTINA

Meet Bettina! Bettina is one of the longest standing team members of Transmitter and has been working with us since 2016. Just a few weeks ago, she's taught our first Summer Intensive Course in September and wants to share her experiences with us in this little interview.

Our Summer Intensive is the latest addition to our program and is a conceived as a block course which covers 6 units per day over six days. Besides teaching, Bettina is intensively involved with the German language and works as an author, editor and proofreader. 

Transmitter: Bettina, you have been teaching at Transmitter for several years already! Can you still introduce yourself briefly for all of those who haven't met you yet?

Bettina: Yes, right. I've been teaching German as a foreign language since 2016 and since then I've also been teaching at Transmitter. Before that I was lucky enough to work for a project in the field of Nazi looted goods in the historical collections of the Berlin City Library. Before that, I worked for smaller publishing houses and authors in the area of editing and proofreading, and in between I published a children's book. After a few semesters of English and art history at the University of Regensburg I moved to Berlin - and stayed here.


Transmitter: In September you gave our Summer Intensive Course for beginners. It was the first time we offered this course format. What was special about this format for you as a teacher?

Bettina: What was special for me was that with this format, 6 days in a row with 6 units each, the phases in which the students can practice their newly learned grammar and vocabulary were actually completely eliminated. This means there was hardly any time to review and process what they have learned, e.g. in the form of homework and revision. But I think the reason why it worked so well in spite of this is the intensity and being exposed to the language for several hours a day. In the end, I was amazed at how much is possible in such a short time and was also really proud of my students!


Transmitter: What else do you like most about teaching and what on the other hand is the biggest challenge for you?

Bettina: A challenge for me is to deal with mistakes I make or with the fact that the lessons are not going "perfectly". Especially in the beginning it was very tough. In the meantime, however, I know my strengths in teaching and can therefore deal with weaknesses better.
What I find particularly enriching about this work is when I notice how the students benefit from it in their everyday lives, i.e. when they gain the self-confidence to speak German, whether with German-speaking friends or at the office, or when they recognize and understand words on posters while walking through the city. Orientation is one of the basic human needs, and language is extremely important for this.


Transmitter: Finally, do you have a little Berlin secret tip for us? What do you like doing in the city?

Bettina: One tip is to cycle along Köpenicker Chaussee to Funkhaus Berlin, sit down at the Spree and enjoy the sun in the summer. And they also have very tasty pizza there!  As soon as it's possible again, you should also visit one of the concerts at the Funkhaus, because the architecture and acoustics there are really breathtaking!
