In the beginning of March the first session of the Arts & Language Workshop series took place. Under the motto "alphabet soup", we met here at Transmitter for an afternoon to exchange our learning and teaching experiences with the German language and in particular to examine textbook series such as Menschen or Sicher! closely. The two workshop leaders Ximena and Rowan, who study Art in Context at the University of Arts and have a lot of learning experience with German themselves, designed the workshop as a recipe.
This recipe led us through playful activities in which we exchanged ideas and experiences step by step, cut up textbooks and re-collaged and commented on the contents. We noticed especially that many textbooks depicted a very stereotypical image of women and men with which we could not identify. We also noticed that Germany is represented quite homogeneously in the books. People with migration background or alternative life concepts are excluded. Finally, each participant designed a double page of the zine that reflects her personal experiences.
In each step we prepared a delicious vegetable soup at the same time - of course with alphabet noodles. At the end of the workshop, we were able to benefit doubly from our joint work. Besides sipping the soup, we held the finished zine in our hands!
Thanks a lot to Rowan and Ximena for the exciting workshop and the great preparation!
Here you can also view the zine online.
We are looking forward to continue the workshop series as soon as the situation has calmed and it is safe again to meet in bigger groups.
