WORKSHOP: ARTS & LANGUAGE

We are happy to announce an exciting workshop series that will be held throughout March at Transmitter. Taking place over three Saturday afternoons, these workshops will focus on an exchange of language learning experiences, especially a critical confrontation with current teaching methods using different artistic strategies.

The workshops have been realised  and will be held by Ximena and Rowan, who study Art in Context at Berlin's University of the Arts (find more about their studies here). In addition to their artistic works in experimental film (see Rowan's work here) and art pedagogy, Ximena and Rowan are German learners too, which has inspired them to look for alternative, inclusive learning methods.

WHEN?

Part 1: Communal meal and zine workshop // SAT 14.03.2020 

Part 2: Sound Walk // SAT 21.03.2020 

Part 3: Video Manifesto workshop //  SAT 28.03.2020 

All workshops will take place on their assigned dates between 15.30 - 18.30, meeting at Transmitter.

Calling  all German learners, of ANY level* and teachers of German courses!

In this free three-session workshop series, we will use a mix of artistic strategies** (including cooking, drawing, collaging, video and sound recording) to exchange experiences of learning the language, deconstruct and question current teaching methods and develop new, creative and inclusive strategies for learning.

It will be most useful to come for all three dates, but a drop-in for a session is also possible.

*If you are just beginning to speak German you are very welcome, the workshops will be accessible all levels of the German language. 

** No prior knowledge of artistic methods is needed, come as you are! 

ADDITIONAL INFO//

Part 1: SATURDAY 14.03 // 15:30 - 18:30 // Communal meal + zine workshop 

Through playful and artistic activities we prepare a soup together. Through cooking and eating we will exchange experiences of learning German and discuss stereotypes and ideologies conveyed in course textbooks. Through collage, drawing and photocopying we will intervene with old books to make a mini-zine.

Part 2: SATURDAY 21.03 // 15:30 - 18:30 // Sound Walk  

On a sound walk around Kreuzberg we will use sound recorders and a variety of microphones to  create a sound diary, taking into account our relationship with Berlin and how it changes during the language learning process.

Part 3: SATURDAY 28.03 // 15:30- 18:30 Part 3: Video Manifesto workshop

Using video cameras as playful tools we will create and record a 'new manifesto for German learning', which challenges hierarchies within language learning.
